Type of setting Childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.1
Introduction
This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.
p.2
Introduction
The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).
p.2
Introduction
The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.2
Description of the childminding
The childminder was registered in 2002. She lives with her two children in a semi- detached house in Langley Mill, North Nottinghamshire. The whole of the ground floor and bathroom upstairs in the childminder’s house is used for childminding and there is a fully enclosed garden for outside play. The family has a pet cat, a hamster and fish. The childminder walks to the local schools and pre-school to take and collect children.
p.3
Description of the childminding
The childminder is registered to care for five children under the age of eight years, two of whom may be in the early years age group. There are currently four children from two years 11 months to 11 years on roll, two of whom are in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The provision is registered by Ofsted on the Early Years Register and the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. The childminder is a member of the National Childminding Association.
p.3
Overall effectiveness of the early years provision
Overall the quality of the provision is inadequate. The childminder does not have a secure knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage and as a result some legal requirements are not being met and children's progress towards the early learning goals is not effectively supported. Children's welfare and safety is not fully promoted because documentation and training is not fully up-to-date or comprehensive. The childminder maintains appropriate links with parents so that information about children's needs is shared daily. Although there are some processes in place for monitoring the effectiveness of the these have not identified key areas for development.
p.3
Overall effectiveness of the early years provision
Overall, the early years provision requires significant improvement. The registered person is given a Notice to Improve that sets out actions to be carried out.

provision
Records, documentation and training is not sufficiently maintained to support children's welfare and safety. The childminder has not identified key areas for development within the processes for self-evaluation and consequently they have not been addressed. Most risks are assessed and minimised within the home, however, there is no record of the risk assessment and there remain some aspects of the environment that have not been fully addressed such as the storage of cleaning materials in the kitchen. The childminder has a suitable knowledge about appropriate procedures for the administration of medication, although she does not hold a current first aid qualification.
p.4
provision
Parents are kept informed of children's activities and daily routines, with information being shared daily to ensure dietary and specific needs are met. Children are helped to settle into the setting and the childminder meets with parents before children start in her care. Parents are not provided with the correct contact details for the regulator which means they are not fully informed about appropriate procedures. The childminder has a satisfactory awareness of the child protection issues and the appropriate authorities to contact, although does not have a copy of the current local safeguarding procedures. The environment is organised so that children have access to a range of toys and resources that are suitable for their ages and stages in development. The childminder sets activities out ready for children as they arrive and they are able to choose further resources from the labelled boxes in the playroom.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
Children's progress towards the early learning goals is not clearly monitored because the childminder has a limited understanding of the areas of learning and the requirements for observation and assessment. Children are involved in a range This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 of activities, mostly out of the home, which support their social and physical skills. They enjoy swimming and visits to the local parks and toddler groups. The childminder identifies some areas of children's development that require further support and works with parents to help children make further progress, however, without systematic observations, planning and assessments she does not have a detailed overview of children's development and their next steps in learning are not sufficiently planned for.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
Children are beginning to develop an awareness of how to keep themselves healthy and safe through discussion with the childminder. They are encouraged to eat fruits and yoghurts for snack and talk about road safety while they are on outings. They learn to share and take turns, helping them to play with others and develop a respect for others. The childminder provides some activities and resources that help children develop an awareness of the wider society and visits into the local community provide them with opportunities to know about where they live. Craft activities help children develop their creative skills and children are supported in their mark making and language skills. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
