p.1

Introduction

This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

p.2

Introduction

The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration whichever is the later, which require Ofsted or the provider to take action in Annex C.

p.2

Introduction

The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).

p.2

Introduction

Children only attend this setting before and/or after the school day and/or during the school holidays. The judgements in this report reflect the quality of early years provision offered to children during those periods.

p.2

Introduction

The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.2

Description of the setting

Winfrith Pre-School is located in a self-contained mobile unit on the site of Winfrith First School, in the village of Winfrith Newburgh. The premises comprise of a play room, toilets, cloakroom, kitchen and storage areas. The pre-school has use of the school playground, field and hall, for outdoor and physical activities. It caters for children from Winfrith Newburgh and surrounding villages. The setting is on the Early Years Register, and on the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. A maximum of 15 children can attend at any one time. There are currently 17 children on roll, of whom 10 receive funding. Disabled access is provided. The pre-school opens on weekdays during term time, from 08:45 to 15:15, although some afternoon sessions are cancelled, if there is no demand for them. Three members of staff work with the children. Two staff have attained a level 3 qualification and one is working towards a similar qualification. The setting

further?

 ensure effective systems for planning and assessment, so that individual learning needs are consistently identified and met  ensure all staff are fully trained in the Early Years Foundation Stage documentation and procedures

p.3

provision

All safeguarding procedures are fully in place and meet regulations. Leadership ensures all staff appointments are fully vetted and meet current requirements. Training sessions have been arranged, utilising the support of the local authority advisor and the Early Years Foundation Stage coordinator of the school.

p.3

provision

Parents are fully supportive and feel the staff and provision as a whole is very good. They feel fully informed and they have a good knowledge of all procedures. Staff keep parents fully abreast of the progress of their children both formally and informally. Detailed written reports are given to parents. Parents report their children are really happy to attend the provision and enjoy their learning. Parents stated that staff ensure the safety and welfare of the children at all times and This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 there are excellent procedures in place to maximise this. One parent stated; ‘The staff are fantastic they can’t do enough for me or my child.’

p.3

provision

Leadership is effectively working with the local authority advisory staff and the co- ordinator of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage to improve Winfrith Pre- School further.

p.4

provision

The leadership has a clear view of the strengths and weaknesses of the provision and has an action plan which is beginning to impact on the provision but it is too early to assess the depth of this impact.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Staff provide the children with an interesting and enjoyable range of activities that meet all their needs. Children happily attend the provision and are met by friendly and caring staff, who have built excellent relationships with them. Staff have a range of activities set out for the children and they enjoy a game of hide and seek the numbers. The children or staff hide the numbers between zero to nine and the children then find them, calling out the number they find and explaining which are still missing.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Planning and assessment materials are not effective because staff are not secure in their understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage documentation and procedures. However, children do make good progress as the highly experienced staff know the needs of their children so well, their professional knowledge overcomes the lack of effective paperwork.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

The children are very polite and have excellent manners that are modelled by the staff at all times. Their social skills are very well developed and they are confident and independent learners. The children have good imaginative skills and are free to express these through the wide range of dressing up clothes available to them. One little boy dressed as a pirate and carried out all his activities whilst maintaining this character. Children enjoyed playing outside using the wide range of equipment which enhanced their physical as well as imaginative skills. Children played on boxes designed to develop balancing skills, happily rocked on the covered swing and played in the sand pretending to be kings and queens of the castles they built.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

At snack time the children demonstrated a sound knowledge of healthy eating and healthy practices, readily explaining to staff why they needed to wash their hands and be clean. They made healthy choices from the range of fruit, water, milk and juices available to them and their conversations demonstrated they knew these foods were good for them. Children felt safe and staff ensured the welfare of the children throughout the session.

p.4
