p.1

Unique reference number EY308398 Inspection date 30/03/2009 Inspector Janet Sharon Williams

p.1

Type of setting Childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.1

Introduction

This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

p.2

Introduction

The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration whichever is the later, which require Ofsted or the provider to take action in Annex C.

p.2

Introduction

The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).

p.2

Introduction

The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B.

p.2

Introduction

There were no children on roll when this inspection took place. The findings in this report are based on evidence gathered from discussions with those who care for the children and an inspection of the premises, equipment and relevant documentation. Where there are no children on roll, no judgement is made on the quality of the early years provision as there is no reliable evidence on which to assess its impact on children. The report states if the provider continues to meet the requirements of registration. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.2

Description of the childminding

The childminder has been registered since 2006. She lives with her nephew, age eight years in Streatham in the London borough of Lambeth. The shops, transport links, parks and schools are close by. Childminding takes place in all areas of the home. Children have access to communal gardens.

p.3

Description of the childminding

The childminder is registered to care for a maximum of two children at any one time although she is currently not minding. This childminder is registered by Ofsted on the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The childminder does not meet with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has failed to meet with most of the mandatory request. For example, she has not completed the childminder's introductory course or an up to date first aid course. The childminder has not obtained a copy of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework; therefore she has limited knowledge of the learning and development and welfare requirements. However, she is aware of her strengths and weaknesses and plans to improve her knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage through applying and attending the relevant training courses and that it reflects in her practices to provide quality child care.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The organisation of the environment would allow for children to play freely and independently through having access to a good range of toys and play materials from low level shelves and a table. Through discussion the childminder is able to demonstrate how she would enhance children's communication and language skills through continuously talking to them and taking time to explain what they are doing. Pictures and posters displayed around the home and with the assistance of the childminder, children would be able to learn to count in sequence. Children would also benefit and enjoy the freedom of outdoor play through using the outdoor play area and visiting many local groups. Positive inclusive practice would be promoted through raising children's awareness about of various ethnic groups and people with learning difficulties or disabilities. The childminder has a sound knowledge of working with children with learning difficulties and offering good

support to ensure that their welfare and educational needs are met. The childminder is keen to work in partnership with parents and would ensure that all the relevant information is gathered about the children prior to placement and that an assessment is completed on them to enable her to know what level they are at.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

Systems are in place for promoting children's welfare. Policies in place identify protecting children whilst in the childminder's care. A risk assessment of the home is carried out to ensure that areas of the home are suitable and safe. However, the childminder does not have a record of how this would be carried out and what action she would take. Information is not in place for evacuating the premises safely, all in which would have some impact on children's safety within the home.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The home is clean and routines put into place would allow for children to practice good hygiene, such as, washing their hands after using the toilet and before This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 meals. The childminder is happy to prepare and cook meals that would be balanced and nutritious and drinks offered at regular intervals.
