p.1

Unique reference number EY293797 Inspection date 02/03/2009 Inspector Anne Archer

p.1

Type of setting Childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.1

Introduction

This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

p.2

Introduction

The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration whichever is the later, which require Ofsted or the provider to take action in Annex C.

p.2

Introduction

The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).

p.2

Introduction

The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.2

Description of the childminding

The childminder was registered in 2004. She lives with her husband and two teenage children in Kettering in North Northamptonshire. The ground floor of the childminder's house is used for childminding. There is a small garden to the rear of the premises for children's physical play and activities. The family has a pet dog. The childminder may care for up to three children at her home premises and currently cares for school age children before school. This inspection does not take full account of this childminding.

p.3

Description of the childminding

The childminder also works with another childminder in a supportive role at the co- childminder's home. The co-childminder and her adult son live at the property. Together the co-childminders may care for a maximum of nine children including six children in the early years age group. Some of the children cared for may be the co-childminder's grandchildren. The childminder is registered on the Early Years Register and the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

Overall the quality of the provision is satisfactory. The childminder and her co- childminder provide a happy, welcoming and inclusive environment, in which children's welfare is successfully promoted. Effective links with parents help to build positive relationships and ensure that the needs of all the children are well met. The childminder plays a supportive role when caring for children in the early years age group and has an accurate understanding of her strengths and weaknesses. She has the capacity to take the necessary steps to improve and develop her practice.

p.3

further?

To further improve the early years provision the registered person should:

p.3

further?

 become familiar with all policies and procedures relating to premises B to ensure continuity of care for the children  develop further knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage educational programme in place at premises B  use observation and assessment records to help to identify learning priorities for each child at premises B and to plan purposeful play, with a balance of adult led and child initiated activities

p.3

further?

To fully meet the specific requirements of the EYFS, the registered person must:

p.3

further?

 become familiar with the risk assessments for premises B and those of regular outings venues used when co-childminding (Suitable premises, environment and equipment) 30/03/2009  become familiar with Local Safeguarding Children 30/03/2009 This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 Board recording and reporting procedures (Safeguarding and welfare)

p.3

provision

The childminder has a sound understanding of the need to reflect on her childminding practice in order to identify areas for further development. She actively contributes in discussions with her co-childminder about the successes of the day and how these can be used to build on children's skills and interests. Although, she does not yet have a full understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage educational programme or how to purposefully use observation and assessment to evaluate children's progress and plan an appropriate range of activities for each child's next steps in learning.

p.4

provision

The childminder is able to discuss and explain clearly her practice relating to all aspects of the welfare requirements and her role and responsibilities when co- childminding. However, she is not yet fully familiar with her co-childminder's policies and procedures or with her co-childminder's risk assessments of her premises and of regular outings venues. Although she is not responsible for record keeping when working with her co-childminder, the childminder completes records appropriately when required. The childminder works closely and co-operatively with parents, sharing information verbally on a daily basis to ensure they are kept fully up-to-date on the level of care their child receives.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

The childminder interacts well with the children, offering emotional support and encouraging their speech and independence at every opportunity. Resources and toys that are linked to their interests are easily accessible to the children and are used for adult-led and child-initiated play. The childminder has a sound understanding of children's individual needs and interests and clearly understands how children learn through play and what her role is in supporting their learning. At present her co-childminder takes the main responsibility for the planning of activities based on both childminders' observations, liaising with parents about children's learning and for maintaining records of children's achievements.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

The very young children present at the inspection enjoy repetitive activities such as building and knocking down towers of bricks, listening to and anticipating the actions in songs like 'Round and round the garden, like a teddy bear' and taking their babies for a walk in the buggy.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Daily routines followed by both childminders take account of individual children's eating and sleeping needs and support children's health and safety effectively. However, although the childminder demonstrates a satisfactory awareness of the signs of the different types of abuse and neglect, she is not clear about the procedures to follow when making a referral. Consequently, children are not sufficiently safeguarded. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
