p.1

Unique reference number EY374786 Inspection date 16/12/2008 Inspector Anne Mitchell

p.1

Type of setting Childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.1

Introduction

This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

p.2

Introduction

The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration whichever is the later, which require Ofsted or the provider to take action in Annex C.

p.2

Introduction

The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).

p.2

Introduction

The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.2

Description of the childminding

The childminder was registered in 2008. She lives with her three children in the Sholing area of Southampton. All areas of the property are used for childminding and there is a fully enclosed garden available for outside play. The family have cats, rabbits and goldfish.

p.3

Description of the childminding

The childminder is registered on the Early Years Register, as well as the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. The childminder is registered to care for a maximum of four children at any one time. There is currently one child in the early years age group on roll. The childminder is able to walk to local schools to take and collect children. The childminder is a member of the National Childminding Association.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

Children are happy and secure in the childminder's care and are emotionally well supported. They demonstrate developing independence as they choose from a suitable range of play. All children are included through the provision of age appropriate resources.

p.3

Overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The childminder has limited systems in place to monitor the provision and areas for development are not currently identified.

p.3

further?

To further improve the early years provision the registered person should:

p.3

further?

 ensure resources and planned activities promote and value diversity and differences  increase knowledge and understanding of the early learning goals and ensure children experience activities which cover all areas of learning  ensure planning provides opportunities to extend children's learning and show next steps for their development

p.3

further?

To fully meet the specific requirements of the EYFS, the registered person must:

p.3

further?

 keep a record of the risk assessment clearly stating when it was carried out, by whom, date of review and any action taken following a review or incident (Documentation) 16/01/2009  make available to parents a written statement that provides details of the procedure to be followed if they have a complaint (Safeguarding and welfare) 16/01/2009 This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.3

provision

The childminder has completed an initial training course and first aid training to support her in her role. She maintains appropriate records and uses National Childminding Association documentation to record medication, accidents and daily attendance. Records are kept securely to maintain confidentiality. The childminder has not developed written policies and procedures and does not have a record of when the risk assessment is completed. Consequently, some childcare and early years register requirements are not met.

p.4

provision

The childminder liaises closely with parents to discuss children's progress, routines and changing needs. This relationship also provides the childminder with an insight into her strengths, but there are currently no clear systems to monitor the provision. The childminder has a sound knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children so they are protected from harm and neglect.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Children enjoy a good level of adult support. Play is very child led so children's needs are met throughout the day. They enjoy making Christmas cards with glitter, glue and crayons. Later they sit on the mat and play together, using bricks to make towers and buildings. Children enjoy lots of interaction, talking about shapes and how high the tower is or how many more bricks they can use to make it taller. This promotes children's language development, and their vocabulary is developing well. Children are settled and happy. They have a good relationship with the childminder and her family, and seek her out for hugs and cuddles, which are given freely with smiles and verbal reassurance. Children are encouraged to be good learners through positive behaviour management strategies. The childminder gives children praise and encouragement, and participates with enthusiasm in their play.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Children enjoy a safe and child orientated environment with many toys accessible to them in low level toy boxes. However, activities and resources that promote children's understanding of the wider world are limited. Children play 'peek-a-boo' with each other, and are beginning to take turns and share well. They giggle as they play together and take great interest in a visiting baby. Daily activities are planned informally depending on the children's moods. The childminder provides activities and play that promote children's learning but does not fully appreciate how they support particular areas of development, so children's learning is coincidental. Very brief observations are completed to provide a picture of their development but provide little indication of next steps for development.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

The childminder promotes children's health through the provision of healthy snacks such as fresh fruits, cheese and breadsticks. Outings to parks, soft play areas and school pick ups provide children with regular opportunities for fresh air and exercise.

p.4

The quality and standards of the early years provision

Children play in a safe and secure environment with no hazards. The childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 visually checks regularly to ensure all safety equipment is in place so children can play safely inside and in the garden. Children learn to be careful through regular reinforcement by the childminder, who warns them to pick up toys so they wont trip. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
